Irrfan and Tabu’s film directed by Ang Lee gets average collections in theatres
Despite garnering some positive reviews, director Ang Lee’s Life of Pi managed a gross collection of only Rs 3.5 crore at the Indian box office. And this figure includes the paid previews a day before the film’s release. While some critics raved about Life of Pi’s visual effects in 3D, there were some who were busy amplifying loopholes in the movie.
Trade gurus now predict that the film – an adaptation of Yann Martel’s inspiring book – might reach an approximate figure of Rs 18-20 crores in its first weekend. On November 23, the Irrfan-Tabu-starrer released in four languages – English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil in 2D and 3D – alongside Hollywood’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. Although there wasn’t a single Bollywood film slugging it out with Lee’s film, the last part of Stephanie Mayer’s book adaptation was good enough competition to reduce its numbers.
Shot in the locales of Munnar and Pondicherry in South India, Life of Pi has already received a huge round of applause from Indian filmmakers Shekhar Kapur and Karan Johar. Let’s see if the film can mesmerise audiences this week and attain the forecast figure.
