The first box office battle of the year is happening…
We had revealed to you that 2016 will be the year of box office battles. While Raees-Sultan, Mohenjo Daro-Rustom and many HUGE budget films clash, a few other big films are set to clash too. The first clash of 2016 is set to take place as Akshay Kumar’s ambitious film, Airlift clashes with Tusshar Kapoor and Balaji’s sex comedy, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 today. Both the films look promising and have generated a huge buzz amongst the audience. Everyone will be talking about the box office battle, so we spoke to our trade expert and this what he had to say.
Talking about who will win the box office battle between Akshay’s Airlift and Tusshar’s Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3, exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi mentioned, “Looking at the kind of trailers and promos that are out Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 is all mass, while Airlift is all class. I guess KKHH3 will open like a tsunami in single screen mass centres, where as Airlift will sustain fabulously in the A-grade single screen and class centres. I see both of them sustaining pretty well over a period of time. KKHH3 will open like a bomb, but day two will depend upon the content of the film. Airlift will also heavily rely on the word of mouth publicity it will receive and the reason why it has to do well is coz only then the January 26 advantage will come in to play which is on Tuesday. I certainly feel that both the films will do well in their own space, but I feel Airlift will have a slight edge over Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3. Both the films will be at par by the end of the weekend, but by the end of their run Airlift will certainly have an edge.”
We also hear that the landed cost of Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 is under Rs 25 crore, while that of Airlift is around Rs 45-47 crore and trade suggests that both the films will make good profits. For Airlift, Akshay Kumar has also slashed his fees, but has a huge share in the revenues of the film as a producer. The films also share nearly equal screen space, as KKHH3 has booked about 2500 screens and Airlift has booked 2200 screens. Talking about money the films will make, Akshaye revealed, “Both, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Airlift, will earn in the range of Rs 9-10 crore. By the weekend, Airlift will have made Rs 30 crore, while KKHH3 will have made Rs 27-30 crore.”
However with Sunny Leone’s Mastizaade releasing next week, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Airlift may get affected. As Akhaye highlighted, “I feel both these sex comedies coming so close to each other, will certainly bite into each other’s market to a certain extent, but it won’t affect Airlift that much as a whole different audience will view that film.”
