Shweta Tiwari: Parvarrish is a different show of another league!

After winning the whopping 1 crore on Big Boss four, she has donned the role of a strict mother who leaves no stone unturned to discipline her children, almost like an extension of her real life persona

Television actress Shweta Tiwari, currently seen in Parvarrish – Kuchh Khattee Kuchh Meethi, feels that the popular show on parent-children relationship is an extension of her personal life. The 32-year-old relates to her character of Sweety, a hands-on mother who also tries to discipline her children. “I think Parvarrish is in a different league. It is a different show. I relate with the story as I feel that I am living my personal life with the show,” said Shweta, a single mother of 12-year-old daughter Palak.

Not new to television, Shweta has worked in shows like Kaahin Kissii Roz, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat – Kohra, and Jaane Kya Baat Hui. She believes every few years a new trend hits the small screen. “First, it was shows like Hum Log and all. Then came saas-bahu and reality shows. Now things have changed and shows on family relations are being made. Other than saas-bahu, topics like love, parents, etc are being focused upon,” said Shweta, who also won season four of reality show Bigg Boss.

Parvarrish airs on Sony Entertainment Channel from Mon-Thurs at 9.30pm.

Amitabh Bachchan thanks Salim-Javed, Prakash Mehra for Zanjeer turning 40!

Four decades ago when Zanjeer came, it not only rocked the box office, but also changed lead actor Amitabh Bachchan’s fortunes in films and even won him the tag of Angry Young Man

On completion of 40 years of the film, Amitabh Bachchan is ecstatic and thanks every one. Released May 11, 1973, the movie starred Big B as police officer Vijay. It was his first blockbuster after a string of flops and after the Prakash Mehra-directed action-revenge thriller, there was no looking back for him. Zanjeer 40 years of release. Goodness… an entire lifetime, an entire change of my world… (writer duo) Salim-Javed, Prakash ji, thank you,” Big B posted on Twitter.

Before Zanjeer, Amitabh grabbed attention with the 1971 hit Anand, but it was after Zanjeer that he became a star to reckon with and gave hit after hit like Abhimaan, Deewaar, Sholay, Mili, Namak Haram, and Chupke Chupke.

Zanjeer also starred Jaya Bachchan, Om Prakash, Bindu and Ajit and a nostalgic Big B wrote: “I know I repeat the 40 years of Zanjeer … but it just does not leave the system.”

Now Prakash Mehra’s son Amit is producing the remake of 1973 classic, which is being directed by Apoorva Lakhia. Southern actor Ram Charan Teja has stepped into Big B’s shoes. The new version also stars Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt.

Sasheh Agha: With Aurangzeb, I get to live my mother’s dream as well as mine!

Salma Agha’s daughter talks about being friends with other heroines, her alleged scandalous MMS and singing in her debut film co-starring Arjun Kapoor

Sasheh Agha is petite and almost childlike at first glance. Her brown eyes full of mischief intensify her Lolita-like charm and don’t give away the fact that she is doing some rather risqué scenes in her debut film, Aurangzeb. Sitting all prim and proper at the Yash Raj Films office, munching on pizza, Sasheh – a fourth generation actor and daughter of Salma Agha who was an icon in her time – looks completely at ease. There is no sign of the burden that those pretty shoulders carry, of standing out as an actor and a singer in her debut film and fielding the comparisons with her mother that will be made. For now, she believes she has given her best to her first assignment, and wants to focus on promoting Aurangzeb. And this is what the pretty 21-year-old is made of…

Your mother Salma Agha’s thoughts on your debut…

My mother was obviously very happy with the fact that I am debuting with such a big film and a prestigious production house like Yash Raj Films. I’m a fourth generation actor. So although it was kind of natural that I would be doing movies, since my mother and her mother and my grandfather were all into films, my mother wanted me to be ready when the time came. Plus, she is a singer too, and I really wanted to sing in my own debut. With Aurangzeb I got to live out my mother’s dream as well as mine, so yes, she’s very pleased!

It’s a rather daring role for a debut….

If my role was based only on how much I would be exposing, or doing ‘risky’ scenes, as you put it, I wouldn’t ever have accepted it. I have been chosen for this role because I look a certain way. Because the directors wanted a certain kind of a face and an attitude for the role. Being a professional, it isn’t like me to back down just because there are a few intimate scenes in a film. Plus ,it is Yash Raj, and they are known to project their women aesthetically. So, yes, I am in safe hands and I had really no apprehensions doing my job.

Tell us about your character….

My character is that of a power hungry rich girl from Gurgaon. She is someone who knows what she wants and how to get it. She is also very young and pretty, and is not afraid of speaking her mind. The role is, of course, a performance based one, as opposed to me playing just another pretty young thing. How I landed this is another story. Adi sir had seen me, and he approached my mother. I guess he saw that I had it in me. But I did have to audition for the role, just like any other actor. There was no special preference that was given to me and I would have it no other way. It is sweeter when you get work based on your own merit. But the fact that the song happened to me was incidental. During casting I revealed that I could sing too. And they weren’t looking for that. But I guess they liked what they heard. Lucky me!

And that MMS…

See, I know that people gossip when you are a part of the industry. But there is some gossip that can seriously harm a person. So when people were talking about my past link-ups and all, I was okay with it. But then this whole MMS thing started; I couldn’t take it any more. I myself went to the police station and reported it. In fact, I even called a press conference to clear the air. I held the phone next to my face for the media to see that I wasn’t the girl in the MMS. Many other actresses too have suffered in the same manner, and I feel it’s wrong to take such discrimination lightly. But that hardly affects me. That was a hoax MMS and it’s behind me. All I can think of now is my current film, future projects and my singing.

The contemporary actors you are close to…

Not too close. I mean, I really appreciate all my contemporaries’ work onscreen. I am not particularly close to anyone, but I don’t have any hang-ups either. I respect Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma for the kind of work they have done, and the way they have risen to be top actors. They are so young and have made it so soon – it really inspires me. I also like Parineeti’s work. I remember bonding with her when she came on our sets to chat with Arjun. I also loved what Shraddha Kapoor did in Aashiqui 2. I would love to do a similar role some day.

Your ex-flame Ruslaan Mumtaz’s and your films hit the screens on the same day. And while you have a big ticket movie, he has a rather more small-budget flick….

(Laughs) I don’t think like that. I wish him all the best with his movie. We were just close friends at one time, so I don’t really care about what the media is saying. I have also heard the media say that his film is about the whole MMS thing and that they’re banking on it. I think that’s all totally false. My brain doesn’t work like that, I’m sorry. I am just happy, and a little nervous, as my debut comes closer. I have no space in my head for such sidey thoughts.

Worry about watching your diet….

(Laughs) I love to eat. I am totally not diet conscious. What’s the point! I have great genes and they will look after me. Baba, I cannot give up on things I love, no?

We wrote about it and you read it – here are the biggest stories of the year that helped make BollywoodLife bigger and better than ever!

Being on the Internet has its advantages. Here we can interact with readers in real time and know how the react to us through their comments. We understand what people want to read and, most importantly, which stories they have loved, responded to, commented on. And this has been hugely helpful in our journey to our second birthday. Besides knowing our readers’ tastes, this knowledge helps us work harder towards getting quality Bollywood news online, asap, just for you. And what did you read most this past year? Check it out!

Yash Chopra’s untimely demise: When India’s most famous director passed away too soon, what happened? Commotion, utter chaos. This story was as tough for us to write as it was to accept. The newsroom at Bollywoodlife was in turmoil, as phones rang off the hook with our reporters busy covering the death of an icon.

Amitabh Bachchan turns 70: The country’s biggest superstar celebrated his birthday with much fanfare, and everyone who was anyone in the film industry was present. From the oldest to the youngest, everyone arrived in style, dressed in their couture best. And we told you all about it…

Aaradhya Bachchan named: India’s most famous baby, guarded fiercely by her parents Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, was finally revealed in all her cuteness, first at the airport and then at an event. Even as mommy Aishwarya was being presented with the prestigious Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Beti B grabbed all the attention with her tiny tantrum. And that gave you, through us, the first official look of the most famous baby in India!

Atif Aslam wedding pics: When the Pakistani singing sensation tied the knot girls around the world, urged on by sheer happiness or envy, were dying to know more about just who the lady was who broke a million hearts when she captured Atif’s! Well, we brought her to you before anyone else did, and in our wacky style too…and you just couldn’t get enough!

Best and worst dressed at IIFA 2012: Big or small, awards shows that celebrate Bollywood are always a big deal. Our celebrities make sure that they turn up in their glamorous best to these events. And their fans are always alert, ready and more than willing to imbibe the way their icons dress, walk, speak, turn….. But at times we needed to be there, our style writers working overtime, separating the chic and the slick from the plain awful. And you really lapped up all the frills!

Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty’s new baby: Shilpa Shetty Kundra and her hubby didn’t make too much of a fuss about showing their baby off, unlike Ash and Abhi. While leaving the hospital, the new parents were all smiles, revelling in newfound parenthood, and didn’t shy away from the media one bit. And soon we got official photos of the cutest little boy ever – you saw those, right!

Priyanka Chopra’s look as Mary Kom: We may need to apologise later to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for spoiling the surprise he had planned for Priyanka Chopra. However, when we learned that the director had failed to pay the makeup artiste for the look test he did on Priyanka, we had to let it be known. And you swooped in on the juicy news – it became one of the most read stories this year!

Son of Sardar vs Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Seeing these two big ticket movies release on the same day was like watching two gladiators sweating it out in the arena. And the fight between them was not only onscreen. Off screen too, the two behemoths called Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgn fought tooth and nail for screen space. Ajay’s production house slapped a case on Yash Raj Films for using clout to suppress SoS in favour of JTHJ. Well, we had fun watching the battle, as much fun as you did reading it.

Sanjay Dutt Mumbai bomb blast verdict: When the Supreme Court sentenced Sanjay Dutt to five years in prison, it came as a total shocker, since everyone expected that the star would be let off. We got comments and emails by the hundreds from people who were all stunned and awed by the announcement. It was tough for us to report the story, but we have a responsibility to you, our readers, who were keen to know more about the fate of their favourite star.

There will be an entrant on Ekta Kapoor’s popular show who is all set to mess up the equation between our happy portly couple

Rakshanda Khan is all set to make an entry in Bade Acche Lagte Hain as Ram Kapoor’s close friend. Priya Kapoor, who has been on the edge of her emotions lately, will be seen getting extremely jealous ‘coz of the closeness her hubby shares with Rakshanda.

Now the plot gets interesting; although Ram is head over heels in love with Priya, he will bond with Rakshanda, which invariable will not go down too well with his two-month pregnant wife. Bordering on emotional melodrama, Priya will soon raise an objection to their budding friendship…tch tch!

Ram, on the other hand, will love this possessiveness and add to Priya’s woes – naughty boy! However, when things get out of hand, he will try to make amends, but will he succeed or not remains to be seen.

Now, will Priya’s new possessive nature create a rift between the happy couple or will it just be an interim break from all the extra love we have been seeing? Whatever the case, we just hope that the 20-year leap is not based on this so-called rift between our favourite jodi.

The Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani star does a sizzling photoshoot in a range of stunning avatars. Tell us which look do you like the most?

Deepika Padukone is blessed with a deadly combination of a hot bod and an impossible grace. It is this curious and endearing mix that makes the leggy lass a photographer’s delight. And here’s presenting the Chennai Express babe in her hottest summer shoot ever.

The 27-year-old beauty dons an array of avatars – from looking absolutely gorgeous and every bit of a diva in a green gown that reveals more than it hides to being the graceful babe in an orange outfit. “You must have this outfit in your wardrobe – classic and evergreen,” says Dippy. The Cocktail star then slips into a creation that has the perfect combination of casualness and chic. The green waist-band and the black shades up the oomph quotient.

Even the cat-eyed look Deepika experiments with, in a yellow tank top and yellow leggings with funky glasses, impressed us. She then surprised us by going totally badtameez with a naughty yet relaxed look in a mint green loose shirt and hot pants – the glasses adding to the drama. But the one we liked the best is Dippy’s corporate avatar. The pink jacket with a chic shirt underneath it works magic for her skin tone. The minimal accessories and the striking use of colours make her look dominant and on the go gal. Now watch the video and tell us which of these Dippy’s style statements you like the most and why?

The Jism 2 heroine turns 32 today

Born on May 13, 1981, as Karenjit Kaur Vohra, Sunny Leone has successfully entered and made herself home in one of the most dynamic and difficult film industries of the world – Bollywood.

The super sexy actor made the transition from being a successful porn star to a Bollywood heroine seamlessly, in an industry that still refuses to treat its female actors at par with the men. With a superb start in Bigg Boss 5, Sunny’s impeccable manners and positive outlook towards life helped her win over the viewers and earn the housemates’ respect and acceptance which resulted in filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt landing on the sets of the reality show and offering her a dream debut in Jism 2.

Through this project, which was more noted for its sizzling, high-octane risqué content, Sunny displayed that she could carry a film on her shoulders. She cemented her place further in the industry by adding a sizzling item number to her resume titled Laila teri le legi in Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout at Wadala. Now with Ekta Kapoor’s Ragini MMS 2 in her kitty, Sunny is definitely looking at a sunnier future in B-town.

The babe is gonna have a blast in LA today, as she celebrates this special day with husband Daniel Weber. So happy birthday Sunny and have a great year ahead!

The iconic lensman passed away at 11.20 am today at Nanavati Hospital

Veteran photographer Jagdish Mali, actor Antara Mali’s father, passed away this morning at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital. As the news of his death hit Bollywood, B-town celebs and young photographers (who Mali inspired) took to the micro-blogging site to express their condolences. Subi Samuel tweeted, “Iconic photographer, @jagdish mali passes from here to eternity. RIP Sir. You have been an inspiration to me, and millions of Bollywood followers!!!”

Producer-socialite Ashok Pandit tweeted, “Ace photographer Jagdish Mali passed away at 11.20 am today at Nanawati Hospital. Will miss U jaggi. RIP” Shweta Pandit @ShwetaPandit7 wrote, “This is shocking news. Was supposed to meet him. Will miss you Jaggi! RT”

In January this year, the ace lensman was spotted roaming the streets of the city in a disheveled state by actor Mink Brar. The actor and Bigg Boss 6 contestant, who has worked with Mali, recognised him and rushed to his aid, giving him food and clothes. Mali however, allegedly suffering from a chronic mental ailment, couldn’t recognise anyone nor could he comprehend what Mink was saying.

Mink then approached Salman Khan who immediately sent over a car and his troupe to escort Mali to this apartment. According to a senior photographer, Jagdish was suffering from health problems and also had a heart attack. He was battling depression along with problems of alcohol addiction and had turned into a recluse.

May his soul rest in peace and God give his family enough strength to overcome these tough times.

Box office report: Go Goa Gone earns Rs 12.5 crores in the opening weekend

Saif Ali Khan-Kunal Khemu’s zombie fest has performed reasonably well at the domestic box office, while Gippi fails to get footfalls in theatres

In an interview to BollywoodLife, Saif Ali Khan had said that he doesn’t like zombie films and he had no idea why he picked up Go Goa Gone. Well, after looking at the reviews and the box office collections of his home production, we are sure Saif would like to take back his words, right?

The movie made Rs 3.75 crores on the first day of its release and went on to do slightly better business in the next two days. On Saturday, the zombie flick collected Rs 4 crores and on Sunday it earned Rs 4.50 crores, thus amassing Rs 12.50 crores in the opening weekend. “GGG is a very interesting film, but with limited appeal – in the metros and a few big cities. The average audience in smaller towns and cities is not even aware of the concept of zombies, which makes it tough for them to relate to the film. It has done very good business in Delhi and Mumbai particularly, but because of the lukewarm response in tier two and three towns, the film has not been able to go beyond the ceiling of the niche audience base it has targeted. Besides, Aashiqui 2 and Shootout At Wadala are still going strong in the smaller towns, making the climb even tougher for GGG,” informed our trade expert Akshaye Rathi.

The other release this weekend, Sonam Nair’s Gippi earned a paltry Rs 75 lakhs on the opening day. Rathi said, “It’s a very niche film and the numbers over the weekend aren’t something to boast about, but what’s helping the film in a huge way is the shoestring budget it’s been made at! Probably, the least expensive film produced by Dharma Productions in the longest time, it should be able to sail past the finish line (recovery) very comfortably courtesy the satellite price that the brand power of Dharma and UTV will help it command.”

Raja Rani teaser: Arya and Nayanthara’s sweet love story?

The teaser starts with, “There is life after love failure”… “There is love after love failure”…Well, now that has definitely got us curious!

Directed by Atlee, a former associate of Shankar, Raja Rani is produced by Fox Star in association with leading filmmaker AR Murugadoss‘ ARM Productions.  Take a look at the 45-second teaser of the movie and see if you can spot any chemistry between the lead pair – Arya and Nayanthara – in this bedroom scene with a difference.

The story doing the rounds in Kollywood – that Arya and Nayanthara are now an item – gathered momentum when the press meet invite of Raja Rani, featuring the two actors, was sent out; the card was designed like a wedding invitation and had the lines ‘Arya Weds Nayanthara’.  While some dismissed it as a mere publicity stunt to promote the movie, others said this was a prelude to things to come.

“Arya and Nayanthara are very close these days. There is every chance that their friendship could turn into a serious affair. So, the invitation design actually drops a hint,” sources said.

Priyanka Chopra’s date with Hollywood actor Jon Hamm creates buzz: View pics!

The Mad Men star was spotted with the In My City babe in Mumbai. What’s brewing between the two, we wonder!

If you see a suave American hunk flying down all the way to Mumbai in this scorching May heat to meet a Bollywood babe, you are bound to raise your eyebrow, and for obvious reasons. Even we got curious when we learnt – from our secret birdie, of course – that Jon Hamm, of the famous American telly series Mad Men, flew down to the island city to see our dusky beauty Priyanka Chopra. The two were even seen hanging out at a suburban nightclub over the weekend.

We learn that 42-year-old hunk had met PeeCee almost a year ago in Los Angeles when the sultry Bollywood babe was preparing for her international music debut. So when Priyanka heard about Jon’s arrival in Mumbai, she quickly organised a secret dinner date with the actor while her her close buddies Mubina Rattonsey and Srishti Arya tagged along, and obviously the duo was more than excited to meet the American star.

Though we know Priyanka is perfectly single, Jon Hamm’s presence in Mumbai – without his girlfriend actor-screenwriter Jennifer Westfeldet – has definitely made us go ahem.. ahem… Food for some ‘stimulating’ thought that is, BollywooodLifers!

Amitabh Bachchan in The Great Gatsby: Classy and old-school style!

The superstar, who plays the role of Meyer Wolfsheim in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, is seen in a very upper-class wardrobe in the film, even though he plays a gangster

Amitabh Bachchan didn’t charge a single penny for the work he did in The Great Gatsby, we are told. He plays a cameo in the film – that of Jewish gangland boss Meyer Wolfsheim – and even though he appears for just a short duration, his style doesn’t go unnoticed. He is not looking his usual self – and that’s the speciality of the statement. The imperious wave of white in his hair, the handlebar moustache and the well-trimmed beard…it all lends Big B’s look a very aristocratic attitude.

The pocket square is in place, the clever play of contrast between the colour of the suit and the shade of the tie has been taken care of. Amitabh is also seen wearing a sophisticated hat in a couple of sequences. We are told that Meyer Wolfsheim was a Jew who acted as mentor to Gatsby, with reports suggesting that he was Gatsby’s friend and business associate who was involved in organised crime and had strong connections to the seedy corners of the underworld.

Now that would require the star to have a sinister touch to his style. And honestly, his snowy white beard and moustache with shades of grey imbues his personality with that Don Corleone-like villainous streak. And adding to that a flavor of retro style are the salt and pepper sideburns.

Tell us, what do you think about Amitabh Bachchan’s look in The Great Gatsby?
