The Gori Tere Pyaar Mein director was seen having a gala time along with the lead cast of the movie

Born on May 13, 1982, Punit Malhotra is all geared up for his next film Gori Tere Pyaar Mein with Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Famous designer Manish Malhotra’s nephew, Punit made his directorial debut in 2010 with the Sonam Kapoor-Imran Khan starrer I Hate Luv Storys. But we were shocked to discover that the dude never planned to call the shots. In fact, in one of the interviews, he had expressed his desire to act, and yes, has acted in a number of ads – endorsing famous brands like Belmonte and Tropicana, and also shared screen space with Shahrukh Khan in one of them. But looks like his passion to display his charm on screen changed with time as he now belongs to the young crop of filmmakers who are defining the change in cinema. While his first film was about young ‘stars in the eyes’ kinda love, his next we hear is an out and out romcom.

We saw Punit celebrating his b’day with the cast and crew of GTPM. Imran seems to be having a good time with a pint of beer in his hand. We wish Punit a very happy birthday and we are waiting to see what Immu and Bebo are up to in this flick…

Sanjay Dutt dons khaki in Policegiri poster – Ironic, no?

Sanjay Dutt, besides being busy creating world records for dubbing his latest film Policegiri in three hours flat, seems to be caught in a web of irony

Sanjay Dutt, whose review petition was rejected by the Supreme Court last week, has few options left now; two to be precise. Dutt can file a curative petition after which he can request the President for pardon. If that doesn’t go through, Sanjay will spend at least three and a half years in prison. Clearly, his chances look bleak.

Since the apex verdict announced its verdict, Sanjay has been running around to complete his pending assignments – P.K., Zanjeer, Policegiri to name a few. And we couldn’t help but notice the irony in the just released poster of the TP Aggarwal film in which Sanju baba is donning the khaki, at a time he himself is fighting the police and the courts. And when the movie hits the screens on June 1, the actor will mostly be behind bars witnessing its release.

It’s definitely a cruel twist of fate for Sanjay Dutt. Don’t you think so?

Cannes 2013: Will Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walk the red carpet with baby Aaradhya?

We hear that the world’s most beautiful mother and B-town diva Ash will walk the red carpet at the French Rivera with daughter Aaradhya. Grandpa Amitabh too will make his ‘grand’ presence felt at the prestigious do, but papa Abhishek will not make it to Cannes this year. Read on to know why…

While most of our B-town folks create shoo-shaa over getting that rare opportunity to fly to the Cannes and soak in its enviable glory, there’s one diva who has been so regular at the prestigious film festival that she knows the glamorous locale like her own backyard. And that name is – no prizes for guessing – none other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan! The Bachchan bahu has been basking in the media glare all these years at the international fanfare.

This year too, we hear, Ash will attend the 66th Cannes International Film Festival. And guess what! Even her angelic daughter – baby Aaradhya Bachchan – will accompany her gorgeous mom at the red carpet. Now, isn’t that exciting?

What is not so-exciting though is the fact that papa Abhishek Bachchan will not be seen at the event this year, since he will be busy shooting for his forthcoming action movie Dhoom: 3. Sigh! But making up for AB Junior’s absence will be the grand daddy (or shall we say the adorable grandpa) of B-town, Amitabh Bachchan. Big B is already in the news in the global media for his larger than life presence in Baz Luhrmann’s much-talked about movie The Great Gatsby. And now the 70-year-old megastar is gearing up to rock the Cannes with granddaughter Aaradhya in toe!

The babe will wear outfits from seven different parts of India, representing seven different cultures at the Cannes this year

The second trailer of Sherlyn Chopra’s Kamasutra 3D will be unveiled at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival. And the babe is going to be there for seven days and surprisingly we are going to see her in out and out traditional avatars. On the first day of the festival, she will be seen wearing a beautiful ensemble representing the gorgeous Kerala. Maybe we will get to see her in a Kasavu – the white saree with a golden border. What say readers? The other six days, the Chopra chick will be seen wearing ethnic ensembles from Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Kashmir and Bengal.

Let’s see if she manages to do justice to the Indian statements and not make a style boo-boo. Although the idea is super, imagining the babe in a traditional avatar is a li’l hard to digest. Sherlyn will be launching the trailer of her film along with director Rupesh Paul, and we are sure whatever she wears and however she wears it, the signature Sherlyn style tadka is not going to be missing…

The sexy little babe takes the concept of ‘having fun’ to a whole new level

Sasheh Agha is definitely a revelation. Pint sized, though pretty like a picture, the young actor seems to be just as talented as her illustrious mom Salma Agha. Why? Because just like mommy, Sasheh has crooned in her debut feature Aurangzeb. And while her mom was singing about love and life, Sasheh is belting out more dangerous stuff in her debut as a singer. Kids these days! Anyway, check out our tongue in cheek translation of the ‘radical’ lyrics of Sasheh’s Barbadiyaan!

Ude ude phire raaton ko

Jeeyein jeeyein jee le khwaabon ko

Dhuaan dhuaan sama hai dekho.. O..

Dhare hain kyun beh jaane do O..

Flying flying roaming nights to

Living living live dreams to

Smoky smoky mood is see..O…

Still why we, flow let us go!

Chalo chalein chalein phirein

Doob kar naye sharaaratein sab karein

Barbadiyaan.. meethi lage aazadiyaan..

Barbadiyaan.. meethi lage aazadiyaan..

Come walk walk roam

Drowning new mischief all do

Destructions… sweet it seems, freedoms…

Destructions… sweet it seems, freedoms…

The Reluctant Fundamentalist movie review: Reluctant storytelling that fails to tug at your heartstrings

Mira Nair’s film on Mohsin Hamid’s book is good cinema, but doesn’t live up to expectations

Cast: Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland, Liev Schreiber, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, Imaad Shah, Chandrachud Singh, Meesha Shafi

What is the event at the turn of the century that will stay in the minds of Americans? The September 11 attacks, of course. You would think that the election and re-election of Barack Obama as President and the death of 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden would have overtaken that traumatic event on the global big-news list. But world over, countless feature films and docu-dramas continue to be made against the backdrop of the 2001 attack on the United States of America.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist’s (TRF ) premise – that all Muslims are not terrorists and therefore shouldn’t have been tortured in the aftermath of 9/11 – is something Bollywood has covered too, most famously in Kabir Khan’s New York and Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan. The Indian audience has already seen the unfairness and felt for protagonists like Changez in TRF. So Mira Nair’s film doesn’t offer a new perspective on that aspect of the terrorist attack.

The film is a story in flashback – of Pakistani professor Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed), a bright Princeton scholar who shines at a Wall Street company called Underwood Samson under the mentorship of Jim (Kiefer Sutherland). Changez has a rich photographer girlfriend Erica (Kate Hudson), but the relationship is complicated, she is forever guilt-ridden at having killed her earlier partner in a drunk driving incident.

Nonetheless, all is cool in Riz’s high-flying corporate life…until 9/11 happens, just when he has been promised a promotion. Slowly, his entire world threatens to turn upside down, as frequent checks at airports (read: stripping), nasty racist comments on the street and alienation in the office become common occurrences. His relationship with Erica is affected too; she feels she ‘once had a Pakistani’.

Soon after, Changez visits Pakistan for his sister Bina’s (Meesha Shafi) wedding. Back in the US again, he is confused and dejected with the atmosphere; everyone seems to hate Muslims and Sikhs, and his colleagues suggest that he shave off his beard or be prepared to face the consequences. It is Changez’s meeting with an author in Istanbul that gets him thinking about what he’s doing for a living in the United States and whether or not it’s the same as Islamic terrorism.

Surely, the one message that stands out in TFR – but not strongly enough – is that capitalism is just another form of terrorism, which Changez seems to realise over his adventures with fundamentalism. So whether he is operating in Pakistan as an aide to the mujahideen, or in New York as associate director of Underwood Samson, it’s the same: both ‘corporations’ are ruthless to their people and the business. That, in effect, is the message of the movie. But it takes a hostage crisis and killings for Changez to understand.

The handsome Riz Ahmed stands out as the main protagonist, with a range of emotions on display. But towards the end, he gets a bit monotonous, much like the film. Kiefer Sutherland and Liev Schreiber are notable performers. Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, Imaad Shah, Adil Hussain, Chandrachud Singh and Meesha do not have much to say or do.

Music by Michael Andrews goes with the movie’s theme. The cinematography by Declan Quinn is excellent, but editing by Nair’s favourite Shimit Amin (he’s also a Bollywood director) could have been crisper to reduce the spells of dullness onscreen.

All in all, The Reluctant Fundamentalist is an A-class film based on a book, cinematically brilliant, with decent performances. But somewhere there is a feeling that in trying to depict the confused fundamentalism from Hamid’s book accurately, the film itself is rather reluctant. We would have liked to see Nair go the whole hog and make a moving drama in her own interpretation, as an acclaimed director of gems such as Salaam Bombay! and Monsoon Wedding.

Sasural Simar Ka: Avika Gor to come back in new avatar; Bhardwaj family lose home

The melodrama in Simar and Roli’s life just doesn’t seem to end

Colors’ popular show Sasural Simar Ka witnessed a major twist with Roli’s (Avika Gor) sudden death. Now the entire family is moaning her demise. But that’s not all; it seems the family will lose their property and luxury home as well.

Looks like when Veeru transferred the Bhardwaj property to Roli’s name, he added a clause that in case something happens to her, he would get the property back. So besides dealing with Roli’s loss, the family now has to leave their home within 24 hours.

While all this is going on, somewhere in the country Roli is seen dressed in a Rajasthani attire dancing to local music. Apparently, it’s not Roli; instead her name is Jhumki, who happens to be Siddhanth’s wife’s look-alike – how original, no?

“I have mixed feelings. While on the one hand I feel sad about the end of Roli’s character, which was loved by the audiences very much, on the other hand, I am excited to be seen in a new role. I think a new role always offers an actor something new to learn and experiment with,” said Avika. “I also hope the new twist is loved by everyone,” she added.

So will Jhumki, who will be seen next week onwards, be the one to save the family from the new crisis?

Ajay Devgn, Kajol and Tanuja spotted at Lonavala fun fair

The actors made their presence felt at the ‘preserve and enhance’ Lonavala campaign

While Kajol looked like quite a style diva in a multi coloured jumpsuit at the Lonavala fun fair, campaigning for preserving and enhancing the holiday destination, Ajay Devgn took the funky route in those colourful sunglasses. Kajol recollected how she used to come to Lonavala regularly as a kid and that it used to be such a serene place. Ajay took great delight in narrating stories about his younger days and the way he used to sneak out of his house with his buddies to have a gala time in Lonavala. The actors asked for the support of people to keep the holiday destinations of Lonavala and Khandala clean and green, and appealed to make the hill stations more beautiful than it currently is.

While we totally approve of Kajol’s colourful style choice, Devgn’s sunglasses aren’t exactly easy on the eye. It somehow fails to do justice to his intense and serious personality.

Why is Arbaaz Khan keen to work with Shahrukh Khan?

The Dabangg 2 director has surprisingly admitted his eagerness to work with none other than his bade bhaiyya’s archrival. We wonder if Arbaaz is acting as the peacemaker in the Sallu-SRK war…

On the one hand, Salman Khan is not in a mood to wave the white flag at Shahrukh Khan and share screen space with him; so the two becoming friends again is a farfetched imagination. On the other hand, Arbaaz Khan is making unbelievable and unthinkable statements of working with SRK, much to his dearest bro’s dismay!

The Being Human actor consciously stayed away from recent media appearances where Shahrukh was expected just to avoid eye contact with him. Firstly, the Dabangg Khan refused to feature in the Bombay Talkies song considering King Khan’s presence. Secondly, (as per what our industry sources tell us) he even conveniently skipped the Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 music launch only because of SRK.

But that’s certainly not stopping Sallu’s director brother from wanting to work with the Baadshah of Bollywood in the near future. While talking to a newspaper recently, the 45-year-old expressed his wish to work with the Chennai Express star. He said, “I would definitely want to work with him. Shahrukh is undoubtedly one of the biggest superstars of Bollywood. His work and fan following are enough to prove his worth in the industry.”

However, he denied any talks with SRK regarding any project and clarified that making films with Salman will always be his first priority. Why not? He must be well versed with Sallu miyan’s anger! What do you think readers – will Arbaaz direct Shahrukh soon?

Satya 2 trailer: Ram Gopal Varma’s rehash of old fashioned gangster flicks

Guns, goons, violence, action and romance – looks like this sequel has it all

Ram Gopal Varma is back with Satya 2, 15 years after he made Satya. The official trailer of Satya 2, in Telugu, was released this weekend and gives a glimpse into the tone and feel of the film which are very reminiscent of the late ’90s classic from RGV.

The director has said that he’s explored how criminals are using modern technology, but from the teaser, Satya 2 seems to be a good ol’ fashioned gangster movie, replete with guns, long knives and plenty of bloodshed.

The film’s lead actor Sharvanand appears to fit the role perfectly, striking the balance between romance, action and violence. The touch of romance in the trailer, featuring sequences with Sharvanand and the film’s leading lady, Anika, point to a soft side in the story that’s bound to have more than its share of blood and gore.

We can only hope that RGV has regained the master’s touch he displayed in Satya.

Director Susi Ganesan is trying his best to get Sallu on board for his forthcoming 3D superhero film. Now this bit of news makes us wonder if the Dabangg Khan can be a better superhero than his arch rival G.One…errr Shahrukh Khan? You tell us!

Salman Khan is a superhero and we know that! Ever since the release of his blockbuster movie Wanted in 2008, Salman has seen only hits at the box office. But will the 47-year-old play a convincing superhero the generation next can aspire to become? Well, if things turn out in the favour of filmmaker Susi Ganesan, bhai will be seen playing a super powerful, superhero smashing baddies.

Ganesan is ready to release his first Hindi film Shortcut Romeo starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel and Puja Gupta. Meanwhile he is also working on another project, a 3D superhero action film and is keen to rope in Salman for the lead role. “We are looking for an A-lister. Due to the social message in the film, I am thinking of Salman Khan, the script is already over… It will release next year,” said Ganesan in an interview.

Now we are wondering if Sallu can be a better superhero than Shahrukh Khan’s G.One and will he look as cute wearing his undies over his pants? Now that’s some food for thought. Right, ladies?

The two beautiful ladies were seen having a ball as they cheered their respective teams

The IPL has always been a melting pot of glamour and sport. And while the sport takes place on the field, off it, in the stands, it’s the glamour that comes into play. And on Sunday evening we saw just that. The two glam beauties – owner of Rajasthan Royals team Shilpa Shetty and Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s wife Sakshi Dhoni – who have more than just a casual stake in the IPL 2013 games were seen having a great time cheering for their respective teams.

Although both their hubbies represent opposite sides, the two beauties were seen bonding and giggling. While Shilpa came dressed in the Rajasthan Royals blue, Sakshi chose not to don team colours, and wore a simple black top and electric orange nail polish.

And their bonding continued even after the match was over (Shilpa’s team beat the Chennai Super Kings) as they headed to the locker rooms to celebrate with their teams. Check out some of the pics of these babes having a blast!

Vijay Sethupathi: Roles should choose an actor and not vice versa

Known for playing the most unconventional roles in his career so far, the Tamil actor says he chooses roles that he thinks will suit his image and doesn’t usually believe in custom-made roles

Vijay Sethupathi has portrayed an array of characters on screen – he played a negative role in Sundarapandian, a pizza delivery boy in Pizza, a character suffering from short-term memory loss in Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (NKPK), amongst others.

“I don’t believe a role can be written keeping in mind some actor. Even if such roles exist, I don’t pick them because I generally choose roles that I think will suit my image. Roles should choose an actor and not vice versa,” said Vijay.

“For instance, I was considered unfit for the lead role in recently released Soodhu Kavvum, but I knew I was perfect for it. Even though the director initially didn’t offer me the role, I literally fought for it and eventually got it,” he added. Vijay played a misfit kidnapper in the Tamil crime-comedy, which has been received very well by audiences. He clarifies there is nothing wrong in doing multi-starrers.

“If you have a meaty part to play, I don’t see the harm in being part of multi-starrers. Moreover, I will be happy to be a part of a good film than playing lead roles in some bad films,” he said. Two films, NKPK and Soodhu Kavvum, featuring Vijay have been multi-starrers.

All of his films to date have been with debutants. There are few more in the offing as well. “There is no hard and fast rule that I only work with debutants. I give prime importance to script, and when that works out, everything else falls in place automatically. In fact, most debutants express interest to work with me,” he added.

He has half a dozen Tamil films in his kitty. Presently, he is busy filming for Rummy, Pannaiyarum Padminiyum and Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara.

Balaji Telefilms’ chartered accountant Gaurav Chopra files police complaint against Jeetendra and Shobha Kapoor

Gaurav, who has been working with Ekta Kapoor’s production house for three years now, claims he has been threatened for reporting the firm’s malpractices

Ekta Kapoor, and her parents, Jeetendra and Shobha Kapoor have been caught in a legal turmoil for quite some time now. Last month, Ekta, Jeetendra and Tusshar Kapoor’s homes and Balaji Telefilms’ offices were raided by the Income Tax department for defaulting on taxes. Now, according to a tabloid news report, chartered accountant Gaurav Chopra, who has been looking after the money matters at Balaji, has lodged a complaint with the Mumbai crime branch against Jeetendra, Shobha and others.

In his complaint to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy, Gaurav has alleged that he was being blackmailed with threats of false police complaints against him and his salary was being withheld. Chopra claims that during his association with Balaji, he learnt about alleged “unprofessional and illegal dealings, unfair labour practices and high-handed attitude of the management,” and advised them to refrain from such practices but Balaji paid no heed to him. And when he told Shobha that he wants to resign, she threatened to implicate him in a false case.

On the other hand, people at Balaji Telefilms claim that Chopra had lodged the complaint to save himself from a criminal case pending against him at the Jogeshwari police station. In February, the production house had lodged a complaint of criminal breach of trust (Section 406 of the IPC), cheating (Section 420) and criminal conspiracy (Section 120-B) against him and the chief financial controller for recruiting employees without the HR department’s approval.

A criminal case was registered in February for causing a loss of Rs 1.5 lakhs to Balaji, but Gaurav was granted anticipatory bail in the case, inspector Mahadeo Wable of Jogeshwari police station informed the newspaper. Hmmm… money matters!
