When Dilwale announced that they are going to release on December 18, everyone went quiet. Two biggies, Ranveer Singh’s Bajirao Mastani and Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale were all set to clash. Sanjay Leela Bhansali was clashing with Rohit Shetty. Ranveer-Deepika were clashing with SRK-Kajol. A historic film was clashing against a mass entertainer. There was an attempt to squash the clash, but talks failed. The clash was on.
The audiences got divided and everyone suggested, even the trade suggested, that Dilwale would crush Bajirao Mastani because of its mass appeal. And while Dilwale opened phenomenally well and Bajirao Mastani opened slow, it seems Bajirao Mastani has the momentum now as it is set to overtake the film by tonight. Here is an analysis of the box office battle till now:
Opening Day
Dilwale: Rs 21 crore
Bajirao Mastani: Rs 12.80 crore
Dilwale opened phenomenally with an occupancy of 80-90 per cent to collect Rs 21 crore on day one, while Bajirao Mastani opened with an occupancy of about 70-80 per cent to collect Rs 12.80 crore.
First Weekend
Dilwale: Rs 65.09 crore
Bajirao Mastani: Rs 46.77 crore
With similar occupancies, Dilwale lead the way at the end of the first weekend with a total nett domestic collection of Rs 65.09 crore, while Bajirao Mastani had a nett domestic collection of Rs 46.77 crore.
First Monday
Dilwale: Rs 75.18 crore
Bajirao Mastani: Rs 57.02 crore
On the first Monday, Dilwale crashed and collected only Rs 10.09 crore. On the other hand, Bajirao Mastani maintained a steady run and collected Rs 10.25 crore, which was higher than Dilwale. This was the turning point in the box office battle.
First Week
Dilwale: Rs 102.65 crore
Bajirao Mastani: Rs 86.15 crore
Over the weekdays, Bajirao Mastani constantly out-performed Dilwale as a result of the good word of mouth publicity. It helped Bajirao close the gap down to Dilwale. In the weekdays, while Dilwale had earned Rs 37.56 crore, Bajirao Mastani earned Rs 46.77 crore.
Second Weekend
Dilwale: Rs 123.88 crore
Bajirao Mastani: Rs 120.45 crore
Bajirao Mastani closed the gap to Dilwale further over the second weekend. While Bajirao Mastani had a good occupancy, Dilwale‘s occupancy decreased. BM earned Rs 34.30 crore over the second weekend, while Dilwale earned only Rs 21.23 crore.
Second Monday
Dilwale: Rs 127.38 crore
Bajirao Mastani: Rs 126.05 crore
Bajirao Mastani is now at touching distance as it earned Rs 5.60 crore as compared to Dilwale Rs 3.50 crore on the second weekend.
Trade sources suggest that Dilwale is going to slide more over the weekdays, while Bajirao Mastani will have a steady run this week. Trade also suggests that by the end of tonight, Bajirao Mastani will overtake Dilwale and emerge the clear winner. Content will over power mass popularity, which has been the basic theme of 2015.
